Overview
Principal Investigator: Prof Sakis Mantalaris
Co-Investigator: Dr Ruth Misener
My Role: Mentored an Early Stage Researcher Based at Imperial
ModLife developed Advanced Model-Based Optimization, Monitoring and Control as Enabling Technologies for bioprocess-product development and innovation tailored for the needs in life science industries. The ModLife ETN addressed excellence in research and training of next generation biochemical and process engineers in life sciences industries. The partnership, led by Professor Gürkan Sin, was awarded €4.1M for the 5 universities and 6 companies. Imperial Department of Computing was awarded €188,408.
Personnel
We were very happy to have Simon Olofsson as the Early Stage Researcher contributing to this project. Dr Marc Deisenroth also collaborated as joint PhD supervisor.
Outcomes
The ModLife project was part of the European Training Network initiative, so we aimed for excellence in both research and training.
- Research Contributions. Simon’s work has appeared in the 35th International Conference on Machine Learning, Process Systems Engineering 2018, and the 27th European Symposium on Computer-Aided Process Engineering. With the group of Prof Liesbet Geris, Simon has published full-length journal papers in IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering (as first author) and Biotechnology & Bioengineering (as co-author).
- Award. Simon was awarded Best Quality Poster for for 2nd year PhD students in the 2018 Department of Computing Google Poster Competition.
- Industrial Engagement. Simon was seconded at Bayer (a ModLife partner) for 2 months. This collaboration led to a (submitted) paper which is available here. Simon has also presented his work to the Centre for Process Systems Engineering Industrial Consortium through (i) the Annual Consortium Meeting and (ii) individual meetings with companies that have similar research challenges.
- Software Availability. Simon makes all of his code available here.
- Keynote Presentations. Myself and Prof Alexander Mitsos (also a member of the ModLife project) presented a joint keynote incorporating ModLife research at Process Systems Engineering 2018. I also presented Simon’s work (i) as a part of AIChE’s 110 Year Celebration, (ii) at the 2018 Georgia Tech Mellichamp Lecture, and (iii) as an invited seminar at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
