The only way our brain can interact with the world is through movement. Conversely, your motions reflect the state of your brain. Neurotechnology, the fusion of neuroscience and technology, enables Aldo Faisal and his colleagues to exploit this fundamental link to overcome movements disorders and perform neurological diagnoses for the price of a mobile App.

In the spirit of “ideas worth spreading,” TED has created TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

A futurespective of a life yet to be lived: Marily Nika at TEDxZurich

Published on Dec 13, 2013

This talk is a futurespective of how the four agents of socialization in a young girl’s life — family, peers, education and mass media — have evolved over three generations. Offering a comparison of the opportunities, threats and technical career paths available. Extrapolating from existing metrics, this talk will attempt to make some predictions about the world of 2035 from the viewpoint of a fictionalized young female following in her mother’s footsteps. What will the effects of present day initiiatives be on their future beneficiaries? How will these changes aid or hinder the formation of a sense of self in one possible projected future — and why do we still not have jetpacks?

Marily Nika is a PhD student at the department of Computing, Imperial College London and a member of the Analysis, Engineering, Simulation & Optimization of Performance group. She has received several scholarships throughout her studies and she was the first Greek woman to receive the Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship in 2011. Having taught herself how to code in BASIC at the age of 8, she has since been motivating and inspiring young teenagers to pursue a career in software engineering by such means as structuring programming exercises for schools, giving talks, and by writing articles in international magazines. In 2012, she founded the women in computing group at Imperial College London. This has led to collaborations with Facebook and Google as well as various women’s organisations in the UK which have been actively reshaping the career path for the next generation of females in technology.
