The HiPEDS Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) aims to train a new generation of leaders with a systems perspective who can transform research and industry involving HiPEDS. The CDT provides a structured and vibrant training programme to train PhD students to gain expertise in a broad range of system issues, to integrate and innovate across multiple layers of the system development stack, to maximise the impact of their work, and to acquire creativity, communication, and entrepreneurial skills. This EPSRC Platform Grant supports a broad collaboration of specialists in computational science, especially solution of PDEs for fluid dynamics applications. The collaboration is particularly focused on tools beyond simply solving the PDEs - including in particular inverse problems, design optimisation, data assimilation and uncertainty quantification. By enabling scientists and engineers to work at a higher mathematical
level while also accessing more sophisticated algorithms and
hardware-specific implementations than previously possible, Gen X will
make simulation science both more capable and more productive. In this
manner, Gen X is essential to realising the potential of exascale
computing while also making the most efficient use of research
